The South Central Texas office of HNTB is seeking an experienced Landscape Designer/Urban Designer to work in the Urban Design and Planning department in downtown Austin, TX. With a focus on transportation, our office works to provide local, regional, and state-wide connectivity solutions for our public agency clients. Candidates with a preferred minimum of 3 years of experience that have an interest in transportation-related design and planning are encouraged to apply. The Landscape Designer/Urban Designer will work on a variety of project typologies including design and/or planning of streetscapes, bicycle/pedestrian facilities, greenways, complete streets, transit facilities, low-impact design, and traditional landscape architecture for major infrastructure projects including, roadway, bridge, park, and transit projects. The designer will work with multi-disciplined teams comprised of internal HNTB peers and external subconsultants.

Under general supervision, applicants must have the ability to work on complex projects which are prone to change, employ good technical and artistic skills, have a strong problem-solving mindset, and use good communication skills. Generally, work emphasizes design and technical aspects of projects but may include introductions to task assignee responsibilities and tasks associated with business development.

What You’ll Do:

  • Investigates, and evaluates the design, elevations and cross-sections, details and technical solutions that best meet the project needs.

  • Develops conceptual, design development and construction-level plans for urban design and landscape architecture (layout plans, planting plans, grading plans and construction details) using CAD software.

  • Develops preliminary design concepts, technical solutions, studies, graphics, models, animation, photo-simulations, illustrations, and reports for projects.

  • Assists in the direction of landscape architectural, land planning, transportation, and urban design projects from concept development through working or submission drawings, and final urban design plans.

  • Coordinates among other in-house disciplines and sub-consultants involved in a project.

  • Production of 3D visualizations using the latest software.

  • Assists in stakeholder and public participation process as needed.

  • Maintains records, collections and files related to specific projects.

  • Assists in the preparation of presentations of project work to client and community groups.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Urban Design or related field and 2 years of related professional experience, or

  • Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Urban Design or related field and 1 years of related professional experience

What You’ll Bring:

  • Demonstrates fundamental design and production skills with attention to detail with construction/technical competency (i.e., PS&E) with oversight from more experienced staff.

  • Coordinates with clients, sub-consultants, and other personnel within the firm on a regular basis to complete assigned tasks.

  • Develops estimates and take-off lists with guidance from more experienced staff. Delegates the compiling of the list to less experienced staff.

  • Gains an intermediate proficiency with one or more CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, etc.), 3D visualization software (Sketchup, Rhino, Lumion, etc.), and graphics software (Adobe Creative Suite).

What We Prefer:

  • Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Urban Design or related field.

  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), Envision, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP)
