HNTB Construction Field Specialist II in Bellevue, Washington

What We're Looking For

We are currently seeking a Construction Field Specialist II (Senior Inspector) to

grow our Pacific Northwest Construction Services practice. We are looking for collaborative, self-starters with at least 14 years’ construction inspection experience. Preferred experience includes track, systems, airport, transit, and roadway projects. Experience working with Sound Transit, WSDOT, Port of Seattle, Seattle Dept. of Transportation, and/or other local agencies is highly desirable.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Inspects, observes, documents, and verifies work in progress by the construction contractor to ensure compliance with project schedule, contract documents. and plans. Confirms procedures are followed and material used conforms to specifications.

  • Advises Contractor superintendent or Project Manager of necessary actions to ensure conformance with plan, specs, and contract. Reviews and resolves quantity disputes with contractor.

  • Utilizes engineering inspection practices to perform sophisticated and complicated mathematical calculations, constructability and biddability reviews, and measurements of completed work to date.

  • Reviews and check calculations for Inspector's daily report of assigned work activities, contractor labor and equipment, quantity of material received and verified.

  • Performs on-site material testing and produces as-constructed sketches.

  • Leverage relationships with peers for project discovery and talent acquisition.

  • Maintains as-built record drawings.

  • Performs contract close-out documentation.

  • Performs construction schedule reviews, contractor pay estimate reviews, and change order management.

  • Prepares and leads project progress meetings.

  • Serves as field technical subject matter expert.

  • May lead daily assignments, mentor, and train employees.

  • Partners with client and acts as liaison between the field and the office.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in Engineering, Construction Services, or related field and 12 years relevant experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Services or related field and 10 years of relevant experience.

  • In lieu of degree, 14 years of relevant experience

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Inspects, monitors, and documents construction field work activities to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.

  • Verifies materials match the approved submittals and oversees on-site material testing.

  • Maintains documentation including logs, reports, materials testing, force accounts, and other construction records.

  • Provides proactive communication and coordination with resident engineering team, client, and contractor, including attending meetings.

  • Identifies construction issues, proactively recommends solutions, and assists in the resolution of issues.

  • Verifies field measurements/quantities for payments.

  • Identifies and tracks contractor’s non-compliant or deficient work and prepares non-conformance reports as needed

  • Initiates field changes to drawings and specifications and identifies discrepancies or conflicts within the documents. Reviews contractor’s daily construction reports for accuracy, thoroughness, and consistency.

  • Performs construction schedule reviews, contractor pay estimate reviews, and change order/claim reviews.

  • Serves as field technical subject matter expert

  • Reports observed safety deficiencies and violations.

  • Assists with update of record drawings.

  • Performs contract close-out documentation.

  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local agency construction administration policies.

  • Gains exposure to new industry technology and utilizes it to increase efficiency and accuracy of inspection tasks.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Proficiency with computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Bluebeam, & Adobe, mobile devices such as tablet computers, and CM software programs.

  • Familiarity with engineering, architectural, and construction documents.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to maintain good working relationships with project team, clients, and contractors.

  • Ability to anticipate problems, proactively develop solutions to overcome those problems, and discern when escalation is necessary.

  • Some flexibility to work hours dictated by the Contractor’s schedule

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

The pay range for Washington is $130,981.89 - $204,869.12. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
