HNTB Department Manager – Aviation in Bellevue, Washington

What We're Looking For

Responsible for direction and supervision of a large professional or technical group. Coordinates project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the best design capabilities to meet their needs. Responsible for technical coaching and mentoring and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high-quality service.

Primary Job Focus will include:

People Development

  • Identify training and professional development needs within the Department and prioritize against Office professional development budget

  • Develop, manage and monitor career path objectives for Department staff

  • Develop and manage succession plans for Department staff

  • Identify and implement team building activities within the Department

Practice Building

  • Develop and manage a Department Business Plan resulting in sustainable, profitable Department growth in line with the Office Strategic Plan

  • Assist in identifying and recruiting talented potential employees consistent with Department and Office growth goals

  • Develop and maintain client relationships with existing and new clients

  • Leading and/or supporting the pursuit of work to support and grow the Department

  • Identify and help develop new markets and practice areas

  • Helping to maintain industry recognition through prominence in local, regional and national client and professional associations

  • Promoting HNTB's presence and image in the marketplace consistent with the strategic communications plan and corporate objectives

  • Maintaining current knowledge of industry services, projects, and trends

Business Management

  • Maintaining Department employee utilization consistent with Office operating budget goals

  • Projecting Department employee job assignments utilizing HNTB labor projection tools

  • Monitor and manage department performance against established Office business metrics

  • Delivery

  • Participate in project work, potentially as a Project Manager

  • Coordinating with project managers on meeting project staffing needs

  • Along with project managers, evaluate performance of Department staff on project work

  • Perform project reviews and quality control activities on projects

  • Develop scopes of work and labor estimates for department staff on projects

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer

  • Previous project management experience for Aviation projects, in planning, engineering, or construction management related fields.

  • Previous engineering business management experience

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • Collaborative and open management style

  • High aptitude for strategic thinking and problem solving

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Actively manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.

  • Implements and executes the firm’s Sophisticated Sales Approach, Sophisticated Contracting Approach and Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SSA, SCA, SDA).

  • Responsible for the hiring, supervision, mentoring, professional development, evaluation and termination of department staff members.

  • Coordinates department activities and assigns priorities and staff to projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

  • 16 years relevant experience

  • 4 years supervisory experience
