HNTB New Grad - Hydrology and Hydraulics Engineer I in Bellevue, Washington

What We're Looking For

Responsible for assisting in the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans and specifications for assigned projects. This position performs research, development, calculations, design and delivery in partnership with the project team. Applies engineering techniques, procedures and design criteria for projects ranging in size and complexity. Leverages technical knowledge to assist in the execution and evaluation of project designs. Develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support the project execution using current drawing and technical tools, programs and software. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB’s clients.

Our Bellevue Offices is seeking recent grads and May 2023 new grads for our Engineer I position in Hydrology and Hydaulics.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.

  • Supports the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.

  • Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.

  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.

  • Supports engineering teams with various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

We are looking for an enthusiastic EIT who enjoys infrastructure, stormwater, flood risk assessment and management, and stream restoration projects to grow their career in a long-term fish barrier correction program, major transportation corridor programs, and climate resilience and river restoration projects for a variety of clients.

Primary Focus May Include:

  • Field investigation and assessment of streams, wetlands, rivers, and estuaries and data analysis

  • Hydrologic analysis and rainfall/snowmelt-runoff modeling using HEC-HMS, HSPF, MGSFlood, WWHM

  • Hydraulic analysis and modeling using HEC-RAS 1D/2D, SRH-2D

  • Geomorphic analyses, lateral migration, and long-term bed degradation/aggradation

  • Sediment transport assessment/modeling

  • Bridge and culvert hydraulics and local scour

  • Flood risk assessment and flood reduction alternative analysis

  • FEMA map change requests

  • Design of large woody material and other channel complexity features

  • Bank protection design

  • Design of stream restoration/fish passage projects for both natural and constructed systems

  • Stormwater designs according to the client’s design standards (i.e WSDOT HRM and HM, Seattle’s Stormwater Code, KCSWDM, Ecology SWMWW, and requirements for various local jurisdictions)

  • Low impact design (green stormwater infrastructure) where feasible

  • Technical studies, hydraulic reports, conceptual and final designs, Design-Build contract documents and final designs.

  • Preparation of engineering reports, drawings, and plan sheets

  • Works closely with experienced engineers and scientists and with other disciplines on multidiscipline programs

  • Builds effective client and stakeholder relationships by working collaboratively with client/multidiscipline team

  • Strong communication and coordination skills

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master or Bachelor's degree in Civil and/or Environmental Engineering

  • 0-2 years relevant experience

  • EIT

  • HSPF, MGSFlood, WWHM, SWMM, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SRH-2D modeling experience

  • AutoCAD/Civil 3D, MicroStation/InRoads, or GIS

The pay range for Washington is $68,515.40 - $102,773.10. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
