HNTB Water Resources Department Manager in Bellevue, Washington

HNTB Bellevue has an exciting leadership position. We are looking for our next Water Resources Department Manager.

Responsible for leading our water resources department in the design, development and delivery of project tasks while managing scope, budget, and quality control. This position coordinates project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the proper resources at the appropriate time. Responsible for technical coaching and mentoring and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high-quality service. Department Managers are typically responsible for up to 30 direct and indirect reports.

Primary Focus Will Include:

People Development

Identify training and professional development needs within the Department and prioritize against Department’s professional development budget

Develop, manage, and monitor career path objectives for Department staff

Identify and implement team building activities within the Department

Evaluate reward and recognition opportunities for staff

Foster collaborative and health team environment

Evaluate how effective staff is engaged in and participates in outside organization activities (both professional and civic) to help increase HNTB brand

Practice Building

Develop, communicate, and manage a Department Business Plan resulting in sustainable, profitable Department growth in line with the Office Strategic Plan

Drive recruiting efforts for the Department, leveraging HNTB internal recruiting support, and consistent with the Office Strategic Plan

Develop and maintain client relationships with existing and new clients

Promote staff to engage in laddered relationships with clients

Leading and/or supporting pursuit of work to support and grow the Department

Help to maintain industry recognition through effective participation in local, regional, and national client and professional associations and attendance of events

Promote HNTB's brand in the marketplace consistent with the Office Strategic Plan

Participate on project pursuit teams and marketing efforts to drive sales

Business Management

Maintain Department employee utilization consistent with Office operating budget goals

Forecast Department employee job assignments utilizing HNTB’s labor projection tools

Monitor and manage Department performance against established Office business metrics

Work with client service leaders, as appropriate, so that they are aware of limiting contract terms that affect our ability to best deliver for our clients and allows HNTB to ensure sustainable profitable growth.

Reinforce the importance of sustainable profitable growth withing the Department

Delivery

Participate in project work, potentially as a project manager or technical resource

Develop and/or review scopes of work and labor estimates for Department staff on projects

Coordinate with project managers on meeting project staffing needs (assignment of right staff/skill set, recruiting and hiring)

Perform or participate in project reviews and quality control activities on projects

What You'll Do:

  • Develops, monitors and manages the department's operating budget in support of the group or office operating budget and forecast updates.

  • Responsible for the management, growth and professional development of discipline-specific engineering department. Coordinates department activities establishes priorities and assign staff to projects. Ensures staff development, mentoring and training needs are being met. Collaborates with other departments or groups within the office on work-sharing needs and opportunities.

  • Supports the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits in the department and office, including development of department-level strategic planning strategies.

  • Supports the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the department.

  • Supports the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process including Work Planning, Monthly Project Reviews and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client's satisfaction.

  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities

  • Maintains client contacts to ensure client satisfaction. Leads and assists in sales and marketing efforts for department's growth.

  • Recruits, hires, develops and retains department staff, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.

  • Manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 10 years of practical experience including 2 years of supervisory experience.

What We Prefer:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering with an emphasis in Water Resources Engineering or similar

  • 16 years practical experience

  • 5 years supervisory experience

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification

  • Prior experience with WSDOT hydraulics practices including Preliminary and Final Hydraulic Design methods, scour, flood risk assessment, and highway runoff

The pay range for Washington is $159,937.32 - $255,484.31. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
