HNTB Project Manager II - Traffic in Boston, Massachusetts

Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge, Cape Cod Canal Sagamore and Bourne Bridges, the Green Line Extension and the South Coast Rail Program.

Responsible for the leadership and management of a team in support of the project’s profitable operation. Responsible for proactively managing the project's technical budget (direct labor and expenses, including technical sub-consultants), schedule, technical requirements, contractual obligations, project communications and HNTB’s 4 for 4 performance: delivery of quality work, on time, on budget and to the client’s satisfaction on every project. The Project Manager II – Traffic typically manages multi-disciplinary project team(s) for one or more strategic (<$1M) or mini-mega ($1M to <$5M) projects, or may lead and/or work as a discipline lead on a mega ($5M to < $25M) project management team.

Our growing traffic team has designed a variety of local projects, from intersection safety improvements to complete street corridors to system interchange reconstruction. HNTB recently completed the design for a series of complex urban interchanges along I-95 in downtown Providence, developed a comprehensive traffic management plan for the Replacement of the I-495 bridge over the Merrimack River (H-12-039) in Haverhill, and are currently designing several corridors to improve safety and mobility for all users by implementing measures such as shared-use paths, transit priority, adaptive signals, and roundabouts.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Traffic analysis, design and detailing of traffic signals and other transportation related items and providing complete design efforts with minimal direction.

  • Responsible for preparation and completion of discipline engineering designs that are responsive to project needs.

  • Coordinates preparation of design details, plans, and drawings within assigned task areas.

  • Coordinates design development and/or assist in providing technical direction to the scope of projects; provides senior-level technical expertise for traffic-related items on projects associated with conceptual engineering, detailed engineering designs, and preparation of contracts for construction.

  • Develops project design criteria, design calculations, construction details, quantities and cost estimates.

  • Prepares and checks design drawings and/or specifications.

  • Prepares and checks traffic analyses including those completed in Synchro, Sidra, HCS, and VISSIM.

  • Reviews and checks engineering work completed by others.

  • Construction phase monitoring and inspection.

  • Work closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.

  • Mentoring and training of junior and mid-level staff.

  • Coordinates with clients to define work programs and budgets, provide leadership in project planning and strategy including general oversight and planning, project management, project implementation, and ensuring quality of work products.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • 15 years relevant experience

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification

  • Minimum of 2 years successful management of engineering projects

  • Experience with MassDOT and/or RIDOT projects

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for development of the project scope and fee quotation and assists in the preparation of technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA). Leads or actively participates in client contract scoping and negotiations.

  • Serves as the primary client liaison and manages the project team to deliver the scope, schedule and budgets to completion and to the client’s satisfaction. Leads client contract scoping and negotiations.

  • Performs technical discipline tasks including analysis, reports, design, specification, and production for assigned projects.

  • Implements the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA) on each project. Leads the development and the execution of the project management plan. Supervises and mentors team to overall project objectives.

  • Responsible for/oversees project staffing, including, but not limited to; recruitment, development, retention, and succession of project staff; development of plan for project staff reporting; and support for performance and compensation reviews.

  • Partners with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to assist with business development, building client relationships, and pursuit efforts for mini-mega and mega projects in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA). Works with the project team and marketing resources to prepare appropriate proposal and presentation materials. Leads proposal development and interview presentations for strategic, mini-mega, and mega projects to the client as well as general presentations within the industry and community.

  • May be responsible for the recruitment, hiring, development and retention of staff, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 10 years of relevant experience

  • 2 years of successful management of engineering projects
