HNTB Senior Planner in Detroit, Michigan

What We're Looking For

The time is right to join HNTB! We are seeking a Senior Planner in our growing Detroit, MI office. This position will provide the opportunity to work on the most exciting projects happening in Michigan. Candidates should be comfortable overseeing the work of junior staff members.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Oversees research on issues, policies, and concepts pertaining to planning and environmental planning.

  • Leads tasks related to preparing and producing technical plans, studies, written reports, and environmental documents.

  • Directs teams for small or medium sized tasks for projects.

  • Writes and leads production of plans, studies, reports, and environmental documents for transportation and transit projects.

  • Develops planning and analysis strategies using tools, such as GIS, to manipulate data, assess scenarios, and perform project analysis.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Environmental Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, or related field and 6 years of relevant experience

  • Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Environmental Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, or related field and 5 years of relevant experience

  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Leads internal and external coordination aspects with project team members, including other discipline areas involved with the project.

  • Oversees research on issues, policies, and concepts pertaining to planning and environmental planning. Reviews findings and formulates recommendations.

  • Develops conceptual planning alternatives for urban and transportation planning projects.

  • Leads tasks related to preparing and producing technical plans, studies, written reports, and environmental documents.

  • Coordinates with clients, sub-consultants, and in-house personnel regularly to complete assigned tasks.

  • Directs teams for small or medium-sized tasks for projects.

  • Writes major sections of and leads the production of plans, studies, reports, and environmental documents for transportation and infrastructure projects. Also coordinates and synthesizes the contributions of others.

  • Prepares graphics, technical reports, fee proposals, the scope of work, and responses to Requests for Proposals for planning and environmental projects.

  • Creates project presentation materials, concepts, graphics, and reports to the client and community groups.

  • Develops planning and analysis strategies using tools such as GIS, traffic, or safety software to manipulate data, assess scenarios, and perform project analysis.

  • Provides input on recruitment, hiring, development, and retention of staff, including developing a plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.

  • Responsible for coordinating schedules and approving timecards.

  • Aids in establishing employees' objectives and provides feedback from clients while coaching and mentoring their team.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Environmental Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, or related field and 6 years of relevant experience

  • Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Environmental Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, or related field and 5 years of relevant experience
