HNTB Planning and Technical Services Group Lead in Golden Valley, Minnesota

What We're Looking For

Directs the technical production of planning assignments and teams. Coordinates with project manager, project designer and other disciplines on multiple large scale and complex transportation planning, urban design or landscape architectural projects to ensure that the client's technical requirements of projects are fully met. May serve as a Project Manager on a limited basis for select medium and large scale projects. Regular task assignee on multiple projects.

  • Performs various project supports tasks where planning involvement is required or requested on major, complex projects.

  • Assists leadership with implementation of office-wide technical standards and maintenance of technical resources.

  • Prepares scopes of work, fee proposals and assists with responses to RFP’s.

  • Directs technical aspects of multiple and large-scale planning projects and teams.

  • Directs, coordinates, and reviews technical work performed by other project team members.

  • Performs quality checks to ensure client requirements are met.

  • Responsible for significant portions of presentations and public facilitation.

  • Oversees the work of less experienced staff. Assists in directing teams for medium to large scale projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Building relationships with key clients MnDOT and Met Council

  • Building relationships with external teaming partners

  • Developing and driving growth strategies as a member of the local office management team

  • Mentoring others within the office

  • Assigning priorities and staff to jobs

  • Coordinating time and budget on jobs

  • Ensuring quality control is always maintained on projects

  • Leading a staff of up to 15 people

  • Performing other duties as assigned

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Under minimal direction, performs a variety of more highly complex professional planning, environmental planning, landscape architecture and urban design project responsibilities, and leads technical tasks.

  • Writes and/or reviews major sections of and leads production of plans, studies, reports, and environmental documents for projects. Coordinates and synthesizes the contributions of others.

  • Leads, prepares, and reviews graphics, technical reports, work plans, scopes of work, fee proposals, and responses to Request for Proposals for projects. Prepares and reviews budgets, invoicing, and billing.

  • Leads public and stakeholder engagement and presents information to the community.

  • Provides guidance and mentors staff.

  • Leads coordination with clients, sub-consultants, and in-house personnel on a regular basis to complete assigned tasks.

  • Recommends process and system improvements that result in greater efficiencies, enhanced capacities, and improved service delivery.

  • Supports department managers and office leadership with strategic planning, staffing/training, and other special projects.

  • May serve as project manager or task lead.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Environmental Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, or related field and 10 years related experience

  • Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Environmental Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, or related field and 9 yrs of relevant experience

Competencies:

  • Provides consultation on research approaches, evaluation methodologies, and conclusions to make recommendations to less experienced staff or clients.

  • Oversees the preparation of reports and provides consultation on structure and content, including conducting quality reviews. Presents and defends reports to audiences.

  • Manages client meetings and oversees preparation or meeting materials without oversight from others.

  • Ensures accountability by holding oneself and others responsible to meet project deliverables and other commitments.

  • Shows action oriented by taking on tough challenges with a sense of urgency, high energy, and enthusiasm.

  • Leads with courage by stepping up to address difficult issues, saying what needs to be said.

  • Makes quality and timely decisions that keep projects moving forward.

  • Directs work, delegates, and removes obstacles to get work done.

  • Creates a work plan with benchmarks to reach the overall goal.

  • Interprets key financial indicators and addresses issues when needed to achieve the project financial goals.

  • Cultivates innovation by creating new and better ways to deliver a successful project.
