HNTB Bridge Designer/Assistant Team Leader - Bridge Inspection in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

What We're Looking For

This individual is actively working to become a team leader as defined by PennDOT’s Publication 238 by either licensure or experience. Candidate will assist the team leaders and project manager in planning for future inspections. They will ensure the inspection team is prepare for field work, complete the inspection under the guidance of a team leader and then prepare the field notes and reports for review. When a load rating is required for a bridge, the candidate will prepare the rating for the team leader to review. Work throughout the year can include bridge design work and during inspection off-seasons, focus will be on bridge design.

Candidate is responsible for assisting in the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans and specifications for assigned projects. This position performs research, development, calculations, design and delivery in partnership with the project team. Applies engineering techniques, procedures and design criteria for projects ranging in size and complexity. Leverages technical knowledge and experience to assist in the execution and evaluation of project designs. Develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support the project execution using current drawing and technical tools, programs and software. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB’s clients.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Develop inspection reports, notes, load rating calculations, and estimating National Bridge Element quantities

  • Assist with field coordination between Pennsylvania offices and subcontractors

  • Record daily notes from the inspections completed

  • Communication priority maintenance items to the Project Manager

  • Develop repair recommendations

  • Perform design calculations and conduct investigative analyses toward completion of assigned design tasks, and direct preparation of design specifications

  • Perform quantity estimates, detailing and check calculations and drawings

  • Organize scheduling of specific tasks and assignments

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master's degree in Engineering

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification

  • Knowledgeable in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD

  • Must be physically fit, have a driver’s license, not be afraid of heights and have good communication and computer skills, ability to work in adverse weather conditions, operate inspection access equipment, carry ladders, work along side highways and/or railroads

  • Have completed the bridge inspection basic course (within Pennsylvania preferred)

  • Must be able to recertify every two (2) years as a Certified Bridge Inspector through PennDOT

  • Bridge inspection experience with PennDOT, PTC or DRPA

  • Previous PennDOT or PTC design experience

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.

  • Responsible for preparation and/or modification for select portions of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.

  • Develops project quantities and assists with development of cost estimates.

  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.

  • Able to self-sufficiently complete various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience

  • Master’s degree in Engineering and 1 year of relevant experience
