HNTB Intern Engineer - Summer 2020 in Kansas City, Missouri

What We're Looking For

Our Kansas City, MO and Overland Park, KS offices are seeking Intern Engineers for Summer 2020 in the following areas: Aviation, Transportation, Bridge, and Water Resources.

Primary Focus Will Include:


  • Opportunity to assist in construction activities including document review and site visits.

  • Assist Engineer with construction administration activities including shop drawing review and preparation of change order documents

  • Perform basic engineering calculations


  • Coordinate with engineers of all disciplines to develop design plans and specifications for highway interstate projects

  • Develop 3D design model of the project

  • Opportunity to develop communication skills through participation in project meetings


  • Perform structural engineering calculations for bridge components

  • Organize information for use in drawings and reports

  • Develop CAD/plan production skills

Water Resources

  • Potential to assist with flood protection design, stormwater drainage, hydraulic analysis, river modeling, pump station designs, hydrology, floodplain mapping, scour analysis, wetland design, stream bank stabilization, levee, channel and green infrastructure design

  • Assist with projects including site reconnaissance, planning and feasibility studies, modeling, concept designs, permits, final design and plans, construction inspection and administration

  • Perform basic engineering calculations

  • Organize information for use in drawings or other documents

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Completion of 2 years of post-secondary civil or environmental engineering program

  • Previous internship experience

  • MicroStation experience a plus

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assists engineer teams in various tasks and duties.

  • Assists Engineer with research, development and design of projects.

  • Assists Engineer with the preparation of engineering drawings and documents as assigned.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent plus current enrollment in an accredited post-secondary engineering program
