HNTB Project Designer - Emerging Technologies in Kansas City, Missouri
What We're Looking For
We are seeking a talented Project Designer for a very unique and specialized role focused on the leadership and execution of concept design on project pursuits in concert with a specific focus on firmwide technology research and development. While this role is focused on professionals earlier in their career, it is a leadership position in charge of developing our Design LABs team reporting directly to our National Design Director.
Emerging visualization techniques, parametric software and many other tools and workflows which drive the architecture industry forward in the context of speed, precision and compelling visual storytelling will be a key focus for the role.
As a part of new software workflow development, design research and strategic partnerships with various industry leaders to explore and advance emerging design trends beyond the current state of the art in our core markets will be a key part of the role in direct collaboration with our National Design Director and other market sector leaders.
With a foundation of strong curiosity to try new things, this role requires an entrepreneurial and self-starting spirt in concert with a highly collaborative passion to teach and elevate others in the practice by regularly sharing the methods and trends explored through this team lead role. Regular internal presentations as well as external industry round tables and press opportunities will be an important aspect of the education and marketing opportunities of the position.
Plans and develops architectural designs for sports projects.
Determines the project goals of the client through direct client contact and team communication.
Develops design concepts and leads development of design documents during early phases of project development. Project will vary in scale and include many, large scale projects of national public significance.
Collaborates with diverse project teams to implement and execute design intent.
Collaborates with Project Manager(s) and Sr. Project Architect(s) to ensure project is on schedule, on budget, reflects the latest industry trends, and meets all project business objectives.
Engages the entire project team in design charrettes and workshops during the project, fostering a collaborative and interactive charrette team relationship.
Coordinates quality of design product throughout the project process.
Prepares client presentations and presents design concepts.
Supports the marketing and business development initiatives of the office on project pursuits and may have active participation in strategy sessions, visioning workshops, and interviews.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture, or Interior Design
5 years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
Core Geometry Software: Rhino, Sketchup, Revit
Core Visualization Software: Twin Motion, Lumion, Unreal Engine, Enscape and others
Core Layout and Storytelling: Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, PPT, After Effects, Premiere and others.
Core Parametric Software: Grasshopper, Dynamo (python and other code languages are of interest but not essential)
Core Talents: Strong graphic and visualization skills to communicate design ideas in 2d and 3d graphic contexts. Beyond static visualization, animation and emerging interactivity mediums are desired.

Develops architectural designs for pursuits in all major markets.
Develops design concepts and helps lead development of design documents during early discovery and pursuit phases of projects.
Collaborates with diverse pursuit teams to implement and execute design intent.
Collaborates with pursuit team members to ensure project reflects the latest industry trends, and meets all pursuit business objectives.
Engages the entire project team in design charrettes and workshops during the pursuit, fostering a collaborative and interactive charrette team relationship.
Helps prepares client presentations and periodically presents design concepts.
Supports the marketing and business development initiatives of the office on project pursuits and may have active participation in strategy sessions, visioning workshops, and interviews. Particularly as it relates to advanced technology and design innovation trends.
Performs other duties as assigned.

The approximate pay range for California is $82,280.79 - $146,244.99. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
