What We're Looking For
HNTB is looking for a highly motivated Rail Design Engineer in Wisconsin to join our firm's growing passenger and freight rail practice. The Rail Design Engineer will work across all phases of rail projects from planning, design and construction management to help our public and private sector clients maintain and renew infrastructure, improve railroad operations, and expand passenger services.
The ideal candidate must provide a high level of quality while working on multiple projects and delivering work within established timeframes and budgets. A strong work ethic, excellent verbal and written communication skills and an ability to work individually or in a team environment are essential.
The Rail Design Engineer is fully competent to complete engineering-related tasks including research, development, calculations, design and delivery with minimal direction. On tasks basis, is responsible for preparation and completion of discipline engineering efforts that are responsive to project needs. Coordinates preparation of design details, plans, and drawings within assigned task areas.
Rail Design Engineer will perform tasks and duties under general supervision using established processes, policies and procedures.
Primary Focus Will Include:
Track design and railroad engineering in accordance with client design standards
Engineering calculations and cost estimates
Coordination with freight railroads, Amtrak, state department of transportations, FRA and other railroad entities or stakeholders.
Responsible for completion of railroad engineering project elements such as reports, designs, specifications and plans.
Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineers and oversees work products.
Works closely with other disciplines and multi-discipline project teams.
Conducts design and constructibility reviews of plans
Assists Senior Engineers and Project Managers with management of design review process and permitting through outside agencies
Coordinates with construction observers, consultant engineers, utility coordinators, and right of way coordinators
Conducts reviews and makes recommendations of approval of potential construction change orders, utility agreements, and construction & utility pay estimates
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
Bachelor's degree or higher in Civil Engineering
Professional Engineer license
Proficient with MicroStation and Bentley Design
Knowledge of and experience with AREMA and Class I design standards
Knowledge of and experience with railroad operations and signaling
What You'll Need

Responsible for coordination and productivity of subordinates. Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
