The time is right to join HNTB Corporation! HNTB is currently seeking a Resident Engineer/Project Field Engineer in our New York, New York office. This position requires regular travel to our Suffolk County Project office.

Job Summary

Responsible for overall field management of HNTB's contract, administration and coordination on mid to large size projects of a diverse and complex nature. Monitors activities of assigned staff for conformance with contractual requirements. Provides technical leadership for complex or unique assignments. Reviews drawings, specifications, and installation of constructability. May recommend changes to design. Represents projects at meetings and conferences.

Essential Responsibility

  • Reads and interprets complex contract documents.

  • Monitors Contractor progress and compares with reviewed Progress Schedule.

  • Provides guidance and training to inspection staff. Mentors and trains staff.

  • Administers JPIs and Budget.

  • Collects data to brief Client on project issues and provides possible resolutions.

  • Reviews and drafts responses to Contractors correspondence as required.

  • Prepares Summary Inspection Report of Daily Activities.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

Resident Engineer/Project Field Engineer:

  • Shall review working drawings for temporary work.

  • Shall assist in evaluations of changes in field conditions or unanticipated different field conditions.

  • Subsequent to the issuance for construction of the subject plans and specifications and when requested by Contractor, make revisions to the plans and specifications as necessitated by changed field conditions or as a result of a request by Contractor for changes in construction details.

  • Shall evaluate and assist in the resolution of work that does not conform to the plans and specifications. Such assistance may include, but is not limited to, rendering a professional opinion regarding the advisability or acceptability of incorporating the nonconforming work in the Project and revising the plans and specifications as required to remedy the nonconforming work.

  • Shall provide Contractor with necessary clarifications and interpretations of the plans and specifications, as appropriate to the orderly completion of the respective portions of the construction. Such clarifications and interpretations will be consistent with the intent of, and reasonably inferable from, the drawings and specifications.

  • Shall attend meetings or make observations at the Project site during construction.

Shop Drawings and Sample

  • Shall review and take other appropriate action with respect to shop drawings and samples which Contractor and/or its subcontractors or suppliers require, but only for general conformance with the information given in the plans and specifications and compatibility with the design concept of the completed Project.


  • Shall prepare a formal design submittal for the entire project (as-built drawings), as required by the Prime Contract (Contractor shall provide a set of marked-up drawings for Designer’s use in connection with its preparation of as-built drawings). Designer shall be entitled to rely on information provided by Contractor for the purpose of preparing the as-built drawings. This is excluded and will be added by Contractor if required and necessary, as negotiated.

Other Field Services During Construction

  • May provide such other field services during construction.

Construction Phase Services

Resident Engineer Construction Services are limited to the following:

  • Monitor post-design activities.

  • Review and track project progress, forecasts, expenditures and reporting.

  • Provide monthly status reports and internal project reviews.

  • Prepare project invoices.

  • On-Site Coordination Meetings.

  • Partnering.

  • Will maintain a Document Control Procedure for the project.

  • Will maintain post design project files using Project Wise and Sharepoint.

Shop Drawing Review

  • Review shop drawings and other questions from field.

RFI & NCR Review

  • Review RFI’s and other questions from field.

  • Review non-conformance reports. Recommend corrective action.

Field Design Changes

  • Perform design revisions for changes in field conditions.

General Work Conditions

Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
