HNTB Senior Urban Designer/Landscape Architect in New York, New York

What We're Looking For

The Senior Urban Designer/Landscape Architect (UDLA) at HNTB’s New York City office will work on a variety of project typologies including streetscape design, bike/ped and greenway design, complete streets, transit station design, wetlands and green infrastructure, resiliency and landscape restoration plans for major infrastructure projects including resiliency, roadway, bridge and transit projects. The Senior UDLA will work closely with a multi-disciplined team of consultants both within the office and externally.

The Senior UDLA will supervise design assignments and the technical production of concept plans, design development drawings and construction documents. Coordinates efforts with project manager, design team and other disciplines on multiple, large-scale and complex projects to ensure that the client’s technical requirements for all urban design and landscape architecture aspects of project are fully met. Performs various project support tasks where urban design and landscape architecture involvement is required or requested on major, complex projects. May serve as a Project Manager on a limited basis for select large scale projects. Regular task assignee on multiple projects.

This position also provides the opportunity to serve as a stakeholder engagement lead and/or work on various urban, environmental and transportation planning tasks for candidates interested in working at multiple scales and through multiple project stages.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • With a thorough knowledge of landscape architecture and/or urban design, understands the design applications of construction materials, plan materials, construction methods and the integration of landscape architecture and urban design with other disciplines.

  • Assists group and office leadership with implementation of office-wide technical standards and maintenance of technical and design resources files.

  • Directs design and technical aspects of multiple and large-scale projects and teams.

  • Articulates project design in written, verbal and graphic form.

  • Conducts site visits to review implementation of project.

  • Directs and coordinates technical work efforts and reviews technical work performed by other project team members for accuracy and completeness. Performs quality checks to ensure client requirements are met.

  • Supervises professionals of lesser experience in the preparation of urban design and landscape architecture projects, studies and reports.

  • Responsible for significant portions of presentations and public facilitation.

  • Prepares scopes of work, fee proposals and responses to RFP’s for major, complex projects.

  • Assists in the preparation for training programs that focus on design excellence and delivering 4 for 4 performance.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • RLA, RA certification

  • Identifies and recommends appropriate technical procedures that should be used on a project.

  • Leads and prepares design documents, technical plans, and written reports on projects.

  • Develops and prepares work plans, scopes of work, fee proposals, and responses to RFP’s for projects.

  • Provides oversight in consistent delivery of quality work, on time, on budget, and to the client's satisfaction on every project.

  • Understands the design applications of construction materials, plan materials, construction methods, and the integration of landscape architecture and urban design with other disciplines.

  • Reviews shop drawings and requests for information.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Urban Design or related field and 10 years of related professional experience

  • Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Urban Design or related field and 9 years of related professional experience


  • Demonstrates advanced design and production skills with construction/technical competency (i.e., PS&E) utilizing attention to detail, with minimal oversight from Section Leader or Manager.

  • Coordinates with clients, sub-consultants and personnel within the firm on a regular basis to manage projects, maintaining strong relationships.

  • Practices strong project management skills.

  • Directs and supervises the work to the project team in coordination with the Section Leader or Manager.

  • Discovers project opportunities and initiates involvement in business development.

  • Possesses strong writing skills to support client proposals.

  • Uses interpersonal savvy to relate openly and comfortably with diverse members of the team, department, multi-disciplines of the firm, and client staff/leadership. Learns new methodologies and construction techniques for specific project types.

  • Provides development opportunities to educate the team and the client.
