The time is right to join HNTB! We are seeking candidates for the position of Traction Power Systems Engineer III in our New York, NY office.

Job Summary

Within a given discipline, is fully competent to complete engineering-related tasks including research, development, calculations, design and delivery with minimal direction. On tasks basis, is responsible for preparation and completion of discipline engineering efforts that are responsive to project needs. Coordinates preparation of design details, plans, and drawings within assigned task areas.

Essential Responsibility

  • Responsible for completion of discipline engineering project elements such as reports, designs, specifications and plans.

  • Responsible for coordination and productivity of subordinates. Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineers.

  • Works closely with other disciplines and multi-discipline projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

Experience in the design of:

  • AC and DC power distribution systems and AC and DC traction power substation, including 600/750 volt DC rail transit traction power substations and 25KV rail transit traction power substations

  • Third rail characteristics and railway operations understanding

  • Stand-By and Emergency Generation Systems

  • Circuit Breakers, Switchgear, Transformers, Rectifiers, including SCADA and PLC Protection Systems

  • Indoor and Outdoor lighting, CCTV cameras, Fire Alarm, and communications

  • Motors/Motor Controls

  • Wayside cable plant and routing of conduits and duct banks

Responsibilities include:

  • Assistance with power system studies DC electrified railway systems

  • Assists in the preparation of computer simulations and studies including DC load flow, short-circuit availability, motor-starting, and protective relay coordination studies

  • Performs site investigations in substations and along railroad tracks

  • Work closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects

Basic Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Engineering

5 years relevant experience


Preferred Qualification/Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering required with Master’s degree preferred

  • Engineering in Training (EIT) certificate, preferred

  • 5+ years’ experience in design, installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical traction power systems

  • Software experience in AutoCAD and Microstation, including Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Preferred Knowledge

  • Industry standards associated with railway design and operation

  • Insulation coordination, grounding, and ampacity studies

  • Electric locomotive, rolling stock, and EMU operating characteristics and design

  • Utility system operation and design

  • Energy storage and regenerative braking technology

  • Northeast Railroad AC and DC Traction Power systems

General Work Conditions

Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
