HNTB Sr Project Engineer - Traction Power (Rail Systems) in Oakland, California

What We're Looking For

Provides coordination of project execution and control, in a given discipline area, to achieve continuity of purpose within scope, budget, and time schedules from initial start-up through project closeout. Also accountable for handling specific design aspects on projects appropriate to discipline field. Coordinates efforts of assigned design team to ensure completeness and accuracy of design effort. Serves as technical liaison with client on project efforts. Responsible for gross revenue of $1-$2M.

Essential Responsibilities:

As a part of our growing Rail Systems Team that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges, the position will support rail and transit projects related to electrification, traction power systems, and overhead contact systems. Successful candidate will be required to:

  • Prepare drawings, construction cost estimates, specifications, technical reports and other contract documents

  • Prepare calculations to support design and performs various engineering-related calculations and analysis using relevant design criteria, codes and standards

  • Prepare power system studies for AC and DC electrified railway systems

  • Prepare computer simulations and studies including AC and DC load flow, short-circuit availability, motor-starting, and protective relay coordination studies

  • Perform site investigations in substations and along railroad tracks

  • Develop and deliver technical papers to industry

  • Prepare and make interview presentations

  • Lead technical design for both AC and DC railway electrification projects

  • Help develop and grow client base

  • Actively manages project scope, schedule and budget

  • Serves as the primary client liaison to bring the schedule, budgets and scope of work to completion and to the client’s satisfaction

  • Performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specification and plan preparation to ensure the most efficient and cost-effective execution of assigned projects

  • Implements the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA) on each project.

  • Develops project scope and fee quotation, and assists in the preparation of proposals and contracts

  • Coordinates work efforts and reviews of work performed by project team. Supervises and mentors team to overall project objectives.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

  • 15 years relevant experience

  • 5 years project management experience

Preferred Qualifications/skills:

  • Bachelor ‘s Degree in Electrical Engineering with Master’s degree preferred

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in electrical engineering preferred

  • 15 or more years’ experience in design, installation, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems

  • Experience in electrified railway substation and power distribution systems designs in:

  • AC and DC traction power system design

  • SCADA and PLC Protection Systems

  • Overhead catenary and third rail characteristics

  • Strong relationships within the industry, and a network of owners and consultants

  • Senior Level Practice Builder and Service Delivery Experience required

  • Strategic thinker, with demonstrated collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment and gain the support of others

  • Ability to work in a matrix organization focusing on mega-win projects

  • Able to take ownership and be accountable for projects and personnel

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to make sound decisions based on site field conditions

  • RWP qualified or capable of receiving training

  • Ability to work successfully and professionally with client contacts

  • Ability to pass drug screening as required by client to work on railroad property

  • Oversees completeness and accuracy of project team’s work. Supervises and guides team to overall project objectives.

  • Provides senior-level technical expertise to client on project aspects within the discipline.

  • Assists with project management duties.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

  • 10 years relevant experience
