HNTB Traffic/ITS Engineer III in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

What We're Looking For

The time is right to join HNTB! HNTB is looking for a creative and technically sound engineer who is ready to be challenged and work as a task lead on a variety of design projects, including traffic signal design/upgrades, intersection improvements, ITS/ATM design/implementation and multimodal projects in our growing Traffic and ITS groups. The ideal candidate will coordinate efforts with a design team to deliver quality work, on time, on budget and to the client’s satisfaction on every project. They will serve as a technical liaison for clients such as PennDOT, Pennsylvania Turnpike, SEPTA, Amtrak, and DRPA. This position could be located in any of our Pennsylvania offices (Philadelphia, Allentown, King of Prussia, Harrisburg or Pittsburgh).

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Designs Traffic Signal, Signing and Pavement Marking, Traffic Control, and ITS Plans

  • Prepare ITS and ATM design strategies including communication and power design, reports,and plans for transportation projects

  • Develops micro-simulation models appropriate to specific project needs, including: VISSIM, Synchro/SimTraffic, HCS

  • Conducts Traffic Analysis including Transportation Impact Studies and Traffic Signal Retiming and Corridor Studies

  • Provides quality control of traffic analyses, including traffic data, forecasts, simulation and operations analysis

  • Highway Safety Manual (HSM) experience

  • Concept of Operations and Systems Engineering related report experience

  • Builds effective client relationships

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field is required

  • 5 to 10+ years of related experience preferred

  • EIT/PE Licensed in Pennsylvania

  • PTOE certification preferred

  • PennDOT experience

  • Knowledge and experience using CADD Software, such as MicroStation or AutoCAD

  • Traffic Signal Design, Traffic Planning, TIS/HOP experience

  • Experience with communications technologies

  • Experience with ITS design and transportation systems management and operations (TSM&O) tools

  • Proficient in Synchro

  • VISSIM, HCS and GIS knowledge

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.

  • Assist in the development of project specifications.

  • Responsible for development of discipline specific engineering project elements/deliverables such as reports, designs, and plans.

  • Aids in the coordination and productivity of project team members.

  • Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineering project team members.

  • Works closely with other disciplines and on multi-discipline projects.

  • Performs quality control reviews of discipline - specific engineering project elements/deliverables.

  • Assists with coordination and planning of schedules, hours, and distribution of work within discipline.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 4 years of relevant experience

  • Master’s degree in Engineering and 3 year of relevant experience

  • PhD in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience

  • Being tech savvy by showing proficiency in using and customizing tools for design efficiency on the job, understanding what software applications are needed to accomplish tasks, and knowing which software to use for various applications and its limitations. Comfortable learning new software and hardware.

  • Optimizes work processes by using knowledge of the most effective and efficient ways to get things done with a focus on continuous improvement.

  • Understands and is able to coordinate interdisciplinary efforts.

  • Independently progresses the majority of designs and tasks required of the discipline.

  • Exhibits experience with Microsoft Office Suite, and MicroStation and/or AutoCad.

  • Exhibits a thorough understanding of the application related to engineering, geometric and algebraic principles.

  • Manages time, proactively forecasting, and communicating project development needs.
