HNTB Environmental Scientist II in Tampa, Florida

What We're Looking For

HNTB's Planning and Environmental Department is seeking an experienced professional to join the Tampa Environmental Group. This position will support a wide variety of transportation and local agency projects throughout Florida. This opportunity is for someone who enjoys a mixture of office and field work, enjoys working on a variety of projects, is seeking to expand their professional expertise, and applies sound knowledge of the principles and theories of environmental science to analyze the potential effects a project may have on the environment and/or the potential effects the environment may have on the design and construction of a project.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Regular coordination with a team of multiple disciplines including scientists, engineers, planners, and surveyors

  • Review and comment on roadway plans to determine potential environmental impacts or involvement

  • Preparation of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation including Environmental Assessments, Type 2 Categorical Exclusions, Type 1 Categorical Exclusions, and Section 4(f) documentation

  • Write and review technical reports to support NEPA documentation and permit applications

  • Field work including planning level habitat assessments, wetland delineations, protected species surveys (including gopher tortoise, caracara, sand skink, protected plants, bald eagle, etc.) - travel may be required

  • Coordinate with and prepare environmental permit applications for local, state and federal agencies including EPC of Hillsborough County, WMD, USACE/FDEP, and FWC

  • USFWS Section 7 Consultation

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Authorized Gopher Tortoise Agent

  • Experience working with the Florida Department of Transportation

  • Experience preparing NEPA Documentation

  • Ability to delineate wetlands and surface waters per state and federal regulations

  • Understanding of state and federal rules for wetlands and protected species throughout Florida

  • 40+ hours completing caracara surveys

  • Experience using ArcGIS software


What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Prepares environmental documentation, permits or mitigation plans for public and private clients with respect to acquisition and compliance for wetland impacts, bridge construction, threatened/endangered species.

  • Reviews and evaluates technical reports and plans of scientific aspects of proposed projects such as environmental clearance of projects, permitting, and mitigation plans.

  • Collects, analyzes and reports on geological, hydrological, biological or other scientific conditions at the proposed project site to identify the impact on the environment in the construction of highways, bridges or other structures.

  • Performs field investigations and research to determines the suitability of the project site for proposed use.

  • Provides technical advice and assistance to project engineers on specific geologic, hydrologic, biologic or other scientific aspects and their impact on the specific phase of construction.

  • Reviews and evaluates the potential impact of Federal, state and local environmental legislation.

  • Develops and maintains liaisons and effective working relations with groups and individuals, agencies, and the public to encourage cooperative management strategies or to develop information and interpret findings.

  • Prepares and participates in public information meetings and hearings.

  • Keeps current with trends, literature and new developments in ecology and environmental science.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology or related field

  • 5 years related experience

  • 3 years related experience (with Master's degree in Natural Sciences)
