HNTB Group Director - Transit/Rail in Washington, District Of Columbia

What We're Looking For

This individual will be responsible for helping develop opportunities in the Rail/Transit market in Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland. The individual will actively market and perform outreach in the Rail/Transit sector to key clients, industry organizations and groups and other consulting firms. The successful candidate will assist with the coordination of regional Rail/Transit program pursuits with regional and national HNTB leadership.

Rail/Transit Group Director Primary Focus

  • Lead and develop a multifaceted team organization, technical scope of work, the management of the scope of work, and the commercial performance of the project to meet project goals and objectives

  • Define program goals and devises methods to accomplish.

  • Experience with planning, design, and delivery of large sized multi-disciplined, complex projects

  • Experience with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) processes and guidelines is required.

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of the client, goals, objectives, contract terms and corporate policies

  • Manage Rail and Transit projects up to $200-$500 million in total installed cost

  • Act as the Company representative with the client and selected subcontractors during the program execution

  • Negotiate changes to the scope of work with the client and key subcontractors

  • Market and secure additional work with client

  • Experience with environmental (NEPA and CEQA) clearance is required.

  • Establish the program requirements for all areas of the project and monitors the draft and final deliverables for adherence to these criteria

  • Manage budgets, schedules and deliverables and undertake technical work associated with railroad and commuter rail and light rail transit projects

  • Lead and assist with the marketing pursuit of transit projects and high-speed rail and including develop relationships at the client organization, leading and/or providing input on proposal development for the client

  • Lead, manage, and mentor junior engineers in the design of railroad and transit projects

  • Oversight of the design and development of plans, specifications, providing reports; confirming tasks are complete, accurate and in accordance with good engineering practices

  • Participate on HNTB client service teams

  • Actively participants in related professional associations

  • Development of Group-based strategic planning

  • Responsible for ensuring adequate workload is available for staff

  • Work with National practice to identify and secure supportive resources

Preferred Qualifications/skills:

  • Master's degree in Engineering

  • PE in Virginia, Maryland, and/or District of Columbia

  • Experience working with WMATA, MTA, VRE, and VDRPT

  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Virginia, Maryland, District of Columbia required or ability to achieve within 6 months

  • Experience managing successful, large rail transit projects is required

  • Working / technical knowledge of rail systems (track, Signal, Power, OCS, structures)

  • Working knowledge of railway operations / infrastructure preferred

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Actively manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.

  • Implements and executes the firm’s Sophisticated Sales Approach, Sophisticated Contracting Approach and Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SSA, SCA, SDA).

  • Establishes priorities and work schedules and coordinates resource needs/assignments.

  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.

  • Responsible for the hiring, supervision, mentoring, professional development, evaluation and termination of department staff members.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, Landscape Architecture, Planning, Urban Design or relevant degree

  • 16 years relevant experience

  • 4 years supervisory experience
