HNTB Digital Accessibility Specialist in Boston, Massachusetts

What We're Looking For

This candidate will be working within HNTB’s Creative Engagement Solutions Team. Our team focuses on cultivating delivery through collaboration, creativity, and innovations to meet people where they are, garner insight and support, and build meaningful connections and trust. As part of the Digital Transformation Solutions group, our team supports the development and delivery of some of the most innovative and immersive web applications in the transportation industry. We are a diverse group of digital innovators comprised of geospatial and web application developers, planners, engineers, UI/UX and graphic designers, communications professionals, and equity and public engagement experts.

The ideal candidate for this opportunity will support efforts related to ensuring our digital applications, sites, and platforms meet accessibility requirements and/or policies, as well as be a subject matter expert for the group and internal and external clients. This candidate should have a strong understanding of the Website Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and other accessibility standards as they relate to website and digital solutions. Being able to work on and prioritize multiple projects at one time, as well as have experience in consulting or a similar collaborative work environment, is a must for this position. An understanding of public engagement and communications for transportation, transit, and/or rail industry is a plus.

What You'll Do:

  • Provides single point of contact for technology projects and products and/or lead specific technical or functional portions of a project. Determines scope of work and objectives; estimate project costs and prepare proposals and contracts. Manage project budget, schedule, communications and documentation.

  • Assists in the development of marketing and collateral material relating to technology services or products. Contributes to business development efforts, including calculation of cost, risk, and scope, and assist in preparation of responses to RFPs, RFIs and RFQs by providing expertise on specialized products.

  • Applies expert business skills and consulting methodologies to collect and analyze data to determine the applicability, functionality, and viability of new technologies.

  • Advocates for internal and external clients by establishing user groups and acting as a liaison between users and the technology office.

  • Supports assignments for both internal resources and external contractors to meet project requirements. Researches new and emerging technologies and assess feasibility applications to current and future business needs. Analyzes business unit activities and trends and compares analyses against service standards and best practices. Presents findings to business unit leadership and identifies and implements strategies that will address tactical and strategic goals.

  • Works with clients and technology office staff to identify, analyze, design, develop and implement fully integrated solutions of moderate complexity that support HNTB’s products, service and/or business processes.

  • Develops detailed documentation of business systems and user needs, including workflow, program functions, and steps required to develop or modify compute programs or systems.

  • Reviews use cases and other technical documents with technology office project staff to ensure business requirements are adequately reflected in technical planning. Defines, develops and implements quality assurance practices and end user test plans.

  • Ensures process, conducted and documentation accurately reflects the current status of changes and outstanding issues so that business requirements reflect application features and functions. Identifies training and development requirements of user groups and provide support when required by designing and developing training initiatives.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field and 10 years of relevant experience, or

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field and 9 years of relevant experience, or

  • In lieu of education, 14 years of relevant experience.

What You'll Bring:

  • Expert Knowledge – In-depth understanding of digital accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG, Section 508) and best practices for creating inclusive digital experiences.

  • Technical Excellence – Proficiency in using accessibility testing tools and assistive technologies and experience in how to implement them within digital platforms.

  • Advocacy and Collaboration – Strong communication skills to advocate for accessibility within cross-functional teams and the ability to educate our clients on accessibility principles and standards.

  • Listens Well – Seek to understand our clients’ and project teams’ needs through open dialogue and asking the right questions, as well as being open to honest input and feedback from others.

What We Prefer:

  • In-depth understanding and implementation of digital accessibility standards, such as WCAG, familiarity with ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications), and proficiency in HTML, including HTML5 elements.

  • Strong understanding and familiarity with accessibility testing tools and assistive technologies, like screen readers.

  • Proven experience in identifying and resolving accessibility issues, including providing technical guidance for remediation efforts to ensure conformance with WCAG and Section 508 standards.

  • Ability to ask the right questions to right size a deliverable based on clients’ needs and requirements.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communications skills.

  • Understands the importance of quality delivery within budget.

  • Consultant experience or similar experience is a must.

  • Certifications related to accessibility, such as WAS, CPWA, CPACC, NVDA, or JAWS, is a plus.

  • CSS and JavaScript experience is a plus.

  • Communications and/or public engagement background is a plus.

The approximate pay range for Los Angeles Metro Area and Orange County, CA is $138,958.68 - $217,345.65. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
