This opportunity entails being responsible for assisting in the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans and specifications for assigned projects. This position performs research, development, calculations, design and delivery in partnership with the project team. Applies engineering techniques, procedures and design criteria for projects ranging in size and complexity. Leverages technical knowledge to assist in the execution and evaluation of project designs. Develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support the project execution using current drawing and technical tools, programs and software. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB’s clients.

Signal systems provide control that allow for switching and safe movement of railway traffic. HNTB is a leader in this field within the United States in all facets, from initial planning, through technical design, project management and to construction support.

Additionally, HNTB Signal team is actively involved in providing services for transportation agencies across the country. This type of work involves laying out block designs for railways based on train performance criteria and operational needs, development of circuits to control signal lighting, switch machines, and other wayside devices for mainline operation and within rail yards. HNTB is also involved in designing of microprocessor and relay-based interlockings, as well as the design of highway grade crossing warning systems in accordance with state and federal regulations.

This position is for an Entry Level Electrical engineer who will be actively involved in all aspects of the HNTB signal team assisting in the preparation of design calculations, drawings, programs, specifications, engineering cost estimates, and field support for various rail projects. The position provides opportunities for advancement and growth in a unique specialized field.

The position is based out of our Chelmsford, Massachusetts office.

What You'll Do:

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.

  • Supports the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.

  • Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.

  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.

  • Supports engineering teams with various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

What You'll Bring:

  • Exhibits an understanding of engineering principles relevant to the discipline.

  • Be a key member of the production staff using CAD (AutoCAD or Microstation), Excel spreadsheets and specialist software in order to support the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Written and verbal communication skills

  • Analytical capabilities

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively

  • Be adaptable, innovative, and pro-active with a flexible work approach and coordinate with supervisors starting new tasks, developing design, and completing and closing out work tasks.

  • Coordinate well with other engineering disciplines within the organization.

What We Prefer:

  • Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification

  • Knowledgeable with MicroStation and/or AutoCAD

  • Knowledgeable with Microsoft suite of tools e.g. Powerpoint, MS Office, Excel, Word

  • Programming experience preferred but not required
