Unique opportunity to further advance traffic signal design experience while working and learning directly with various divisions of CDOT. This opportunity entails being responsible for assisting in the design, review, and maintenance of the City of Chicago's 3,000+ traffic signals.
Essential functions:
Review of timing schedule plans. Tasks include providing quality review of timing plans, analyzing traffic patterns, and evaluating impacts to the traffic signal network.
Review of traffic signal requirement plans. Tasks include providing quality review of TSR’s including review of proposed signal location in relation to existing infrastructure, review of APS placement, ADA ramp design, geometric design, signal phasing, and sight distance.
Additional tasks include review of traffic control signals (TCS), pavement marking, signage, maintenance of traffic (MOT), detour, and improvement plans.
Field work will be required as necessary to review existing conditions, ensuring infrastructure improvements are constructed in accordance with project plans, and verifying accurate timing.
Responsibilities may include:
Developing and reviewing Traffic Signal Requirement (TSR) documents to ensure compliance with CDOT standards and guidelines.
Timing Schedules: Assisting in creating and implementing signal timing schedules (TS) for efficient traffic flow.
Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC): Conducting QA/QC reviews of signal designs and ensuring adherence to updated guidelines.
Coordination: Collaborating with engineers, contractors, and stakeholders to implement traffic signal projects effectively.
Technical Support: Providing expertise on traffic control devices, including equipment placement and operational adjustments.
This positions core responsibility is to performs quality reviews of traffic signal requirement and timings schedule plans. Additionally, provides the oversight to learn in-depth design and provide recommendations for active and future projects occurring in the City of Chicago. Additional responsibilities include review of pavement marking, signage, bikeway, MOT, and transit plans. Individual will apply engineering design techniques and calculations for a variety of projects ranging in size and complexity. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful implementation and design of traffic signal infrastructure ensuring safe and effective traffic flow throughout Chicago's successful complex network.
What You'll Do:
Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.
Responsible for preparation and/or modification for select portions of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.
Develops project quantities and assists with development of cost estimates.
Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.
Able to self-sufficiently complete various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience, or
Master’s degree in Engineering and 1 year of relevant experience
What You'll Bring:
Exhibits proficiency in applying engineering, geometric and algebraic principles in your work.
Displays proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and MicroStation
Applicant must have a background in development of TSR's and/or TS plans for the City of Chicago
Required background in Synchro.
What We Prefer:
Master's degree in Engineering
Engineer in Training (EIT) certification
Knowledgeable in MicroStation
Urban design related projects, background in bikeway, pavement marking signage, MOT, and transit design and planning

The approximate pay range for Illinois is $79,863.05 - $119,794.58. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
