This opportunity entails being responsible for assisting in the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans and specifications for assigned projects. This position performs research, development, calculations, design and delivery in partnership with the project team. Applies engineering techniques, procedures and design criteria for projects ranging in size and complexity. Leverages technical knowledge to assist in the execution and evaluation of project designs. Develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support the project execution using current drawing and technical tools, programs and software. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB’s clients.

Responsibilities of Geotechnical Engineer I:

Within the Geotechnical Engineering specialty, learn and complete specific geotechnical design analyses under direct supervision. Design elements include deep foundations, earth retaining systems, ground improvement procedures, embankments and cut slopes, levees and dams.

● Obtain geotechnical data/provide oversight of drilling and other geotechnical investigation/data gathering programs including logging of borings and test pits.

● Develop and apply knowledge of project-area geology and engineering properties of geological environments of deposition.

● Review geotechnical laboratory data for conformance with applicable testing standards.

● Correlate and interpret field and laboratory results for use in analyses.

● Prepare and complete geotechnical engineering analyses, designs and reports that are responsive to project needs including design criteria, quality, schedule and budget requirements.

● Work closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.

● Help check work of project team members including subconsultants.

● Perform construction observation of earthwork, foundation installation, wall construction and pavement construction.

● Position may require travel to other HNTB offices, project sites, and project offices for work assignments.

Primary Focus Will Include:

● Interpret data obtained from subsurface exploration and testing

● Apply geotechnical aspects of AASHTO LRFD foundation and wall design methods and state DOT design requirements

● Become proficient at geotechnical engineering analysis computations

● Prepare engineering reports and memos

What You'll Do:

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.

  • Supports the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.

  • Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.

  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.

  • Supports engineering teams with various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering that includes completing at least two courses in geotechnical engineering topics

  • Commitment to continued learning

  • Exhibits an understanding of engineering principles relevant to geotechnical engineering

  • Familiarity with subsurface investigation methods

  • Familiarity with geotechnical software applications

  • Attain knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, and familiarity with MicroStation and/or AutoCad and geotechnical engineering software

WHAT WE PREFER

  • Master of Science in Civil Engineering (emphasis in geotechnical engineering)

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification

  • Knowledge of geotechnical investigation techniques and laboratory testing procedures

  • Knowledge of geotechnical analyses, geotechnical field services and report preparation

  • Working knowledge of geotechnical software (e.g. APile, GRLWEAP, LPile, SlopeW, SeepW, Settle3, and DeepEX are a plus ) and computer aided design software (e.g. MicroStation and/or AutoCAD)

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
